«The Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, will host, on 14 May at 5.30 p.m., the Academic Jubilee Ceremony of Professor José Saldanha Matos, which will take place in the Grand Auditorium of the Congress Centre of Instituto Superior Técnico, in the Civil Engineering Building.
The ceremony will include the lecture titled “Beyond Water”, in which Professor José Saldanha Matos will revisit some of the most significant moments of his personal, academic and professional journey.
During his lecture, Professor Saldanha Matos will recall his childhood in Africa, his time at secondary school in Lourenço Marques and Lisbon, and his university education at Instituto Superior Técnico. Drawing on these memories, he will also evoke the friends, colleagues, teachers, role models, stories and challenges that helped shape his path as a lecturer, researcher, engineer and active contributor to society.
The lecture will also address national and international experiences, projects, lessons learnt, losses and achievements, as well as a reflection on the water sector and its multiple interdependencies. A perspective that, as the title itself suggests, goes far “beyond water”.
The Jubilee Lecture is a moment of recognition of José Saldanha Matos’ academic, scientific, technical and civic career, marking his contribution to education, research, engineering and the development of the water sector in Portugal and beyond.
José Saldanha Matos is a Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, in the field of Hydraulics, Environment and Water Resources, with an academic, scientific and professional career closely linked to the urban water cycle and related services. He holds a degree, a master’s degree, a PhD and habilitation from Técnico, and has developed extensive work as a lecturer, researcher and consultant, taking part in numerous studies and projects in water supply, urban drainage and pollution control in both developed and developing countries.
Throughout his career, he has also held academic and associative leadership positions, having served as President of Técnico’s Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources, President of the European Water Association and President of the Portuguese Water Partnership.
His career stands out for the connection between teaching, research, professional practice and civic engagement, with significant contributions to the development of the water sector and to the training of several generations of engineers.»
