«The Marine, Environment and Technology Center (MARETEC) at Instituto Superior Técnico (MARETEC) is pleased to announce the seminar “An Anthropometric History of Portugal: State of the Art and Future Research Directions”, by Carlos Faísca, Professor at the University of Évora and President of the Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History, on 17 June (Wednesday), at 11 a.m., in room EA2 of the North Tower, as part of the MARETEC Talks, which take place on the third Wednesday of every month.»

Brief overview:

The evolution of inequality and economic growth are among the central concerns of Economic History. However, the use of contemporary measures of well-being, such as GDP per capita or the Human Development Index (HDI), poses methodological challenges and is constrained by the scarcity of historical sources. In this context, since the late 1980s, Economic History has also drawn on the concept of the biological standard of living – the relationship between human physical development and economic, social, and environmental conditions – to measure inequality and economic development.

This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on the Portuguese case, while also highlighting recent findings and ongoing research projects in this field.
