«On February 28th, the Great hall of Instituto Superior Técnico will host the opening ceremony of the Advanced School of Mathematics (Atlas Programme), a talent development programme for students from the 6th to the 11th grade, resulting from a collaboration between the Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa and TreeTree2, a Portuguese non-profit organisation dedicated to STEM education.
In this first edition, 150 students selected from across Portugal — from the districts of Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja, and Faro — will begin a monthly learning programme at Técnico.
The opening ceremony will feature the President of Técnico, Professor Rogério Colaço, and the Head of the Department of Mathematics, Professor José Mourão, and will include a musical performance by the Técnico Students’ Camerata, playing short pieces by Bach. This will be followed by a lecture by Professor Henrique Leitão, Vice-Rector of Universidade de Lisboa and recipient of Prémio Pessoa 2014.
In the afternoon, the 150 students will have lunch with the teaching team and begin their first mathematics classes and hands-on activities.»
