• Title: “Os Impactos Territoriais das Autoestradas em Portugal” (“The territorial impact of motorways in Portugal”)

• Abstract: When Portugal acceded to the European Communities, now the European Union, in 1986, it had one of the lowest motorway densities among European countries. Since then the network has grown rapidly – at an average annual rate of 9% (1986 – 1990), 17% (1990 – 2000), and 5% (2000 – 2010) – and the country currently has the fifth highest density of motorways per capita in the EU27 and the second highest density among the EU15 countries. But what were the impacts on the territory?

The speaker will present the main results of the TiTuSS project developed in partnership with Técnico, which studied the socioeconomic and territorial impacts of the expansion of the Portuguese motorway network in Portugal since 1981.

“Conversas às Sexta” brings together the academic community, regulatory bodies, operators and companies involved in transport systems to promote research and innovation, disseminate and mobilise for funding opportunities and respond to the challenges posed by society.
