On 11 February 2025, at 10.30 a.m., the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP), a research unit affiliated with Instituto Superior Técnico, is pleased to announce a special celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, to be held in LIP’s TTC Auditorium. This day, proclaimed by the UN in 2015, recognises the essential role of women in science and promotes full and equal access to this field.

‘Who are the women of LIP in CERN’s ATLAS experiment? – a meeting of generations’ honours the various generations of women from LIP taking part in the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s LHC collider. This event celebrates decades of female leadership and contributions to one of the world’s largest scientific projects.

In this unique session, the participants will have the opportunity to listen to and dialogue with:

  • Amélia Maio, founder of the ATLAS group at LIP
  • Patricia Conde Muiño, coordinator of the ATLAS group at LIP
  • Inês Ochoa, researcher
  • Beatriz Pereira, PhD student
  • Carolina Costa, MSc student
  • Ana Henriques, former ATLAS coordinator at CERN

These scientists, from different generations, will share their experiences, challenges and achievements, demonstrating the impact of women in science. Their journey not only inspires future researchers, but also reinforces the need for greater female representation in areas still marked by inequality.

Diversity is essential for innovation and scientific progress. By ensuring the full participation of women and girls in science, we broaden perspectives, foster creativity and drive discoveries that benefit society as a whole.

This event is open to all audiences and will be broadcast online.
