Eight engineers with a link to Técnico elected members of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering

The group of honourees includes Rogério Colaço, president of Técnico, two current professors and five alumni.

Since 10 December, the Portuguese Academy of Engineering has 32 new members. Among them are 8 Técnico graduates, three of whom are currently teaching at the institution.

Among the new members of the Academy of Engineering, founded in 1995, is Rogério Colaço, president of Instituto Superior Técnico, Raquel Aires Barros, full professor at the Department of Bioengineering and Guilherme Matos Ferreira, invited professor at Técnico.

During the welcome ceremony at the Pavillion of Knowledge – Ciência Viva Science Centre in Lisbon, the elected members were presented with the insignia and diplomas of Academy membership.

The Academy’s Regulations for Admitting Members state that individuals elected to the Academy of Engineering must have made significant contributions to the field of engineering, either ‘in its technical-scientific aspect and/or economic and social impact’. Additionally, the personalities chosen may also have ‘demonstrated unequivocal potential for further development in any field of engineering’.

In October, the Academy of Engineering also awarded the Galp-Academy of Engineering Career Award to Arlindo Oliveira, ‘for his contribution to the prestige and affirmation of Portuguese engineering’.
