Luiz Braga Campos distinguished with the Insignia of Professor Emeritus by ULisboa

Luiz Braga Campos, jubilate professor of Técnico, was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor this Tuesday, May 31st, in a ceremony that took place in the Noble Hall of Técnico.

He was born in Lisbon and graduated in Mechanical Engineering, at this school. He completed his PhD in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He made the application for aggregation and became a full professor years later, at Técnico. Retired in 2020, Luiz Braga Campos received this Tuesday, May 31, 2022, the insignia of Emeritus Professor of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), a title awarded to retired professors, who achieved a high degree of projection and reputation by the academic community.

There were 167 articles published by Professor Luiz Braga Campos and 268 communications in congresses, in which he was co-author. He wrote 17 books, 13 of which were published by international publishers.

The Noble Hall was prepared for the ceremony that welcomed the teacher, who was accompanied by colleagues, former students and his teacher, on this special occasion. The ceremony was conducted by Pedro Coelho, president of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) and who also gave an speech.

The president of Técnico, Professor Rogério Colaço made the opening of the ceremony, recalling that Professor Luiz Braga Campos graduated “50 years ago” and wanted to “thank this half century of dedication to the university and the country.” Pedro Coelho mentioned that “one third of the articles of Professor Braga Campos have a single author, which is he” what is currently rare and, as a rule, is done together with other colleagues from the same scientific area or related to it.

It was with enthusiasm that António Falcão, Emeritus Professor of Ulisboa and retired from Técnico, spoke about some memories about the time when professor Luiz Braga Campos had been his student. Fernando Lau, coordinator of the Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, also recalled his former teacher today honored and, later, a colleague of profession.

João Miranda Lemos, coordinator of the PhD in Aerospace Engineering said that the commitment of Professor Luiz Braga Campos in what was the dissemination of his work and his own master’s degree at the international level. Filipa Moleiro, former student and currently teaching in the scientific area of applied mechanics and aerospace of DEM recalled in an emotional way how Professor Braga Campos conducted his classes in a rich way, regarding his knowledge.

Then there was the formal delivery of the diploma of Emeritus Professor of ULisboa and followed an address by Professor Luiz Braga Campos, who after thanking all those present, focused his intervention on the personalities that possibly most influenced his career. He also recalled some of the episodes he experienced, resulting from his participation in six international institutions, and spoke about the aspects of the area of activity he maintains after the retirement.

The session was closed by Professor Luís Ferreira, Rector of ULisboa who said that to be “it is not enough to be a good teacher”, it takes extraordinary. “The university and the country are very grateful.”
