With the results of the 1st National Call for Access to Public Higher Education (CNAES) now released, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, brings good news to its community once again.
Six of the 20 study programmes offered by Técnico have the highest Minimum Grade Point (MGP) in their respective fields, in addition to two other programmes – the Undergraduate Programme in General Engineering and the Undergraduate Programme in Electronics Engineering – that are unique and unmatched in their fields. The 6 programmes are the undergraduate programmes in Engineering Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mining and Energy Resources Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering.
Sixteen of Técnico’s programmes have seen an increase in their MGP compared to last year, which accounts for over 80% of the school’s course offerings (excluding General Engineering, as it is a new programme this academic year). The application with the highest average admission score achieved a grade point of 19.9 (which is a weighted average of the secondary school final grades and entrance exam scores). Nine students admitted to Técnico this year finished 12th grade with a perfect score of 20 in their secondary school final average.
The Undergraduate Programme in General Engineering made a strong debut, filling all 30 spots in the 1st call with a MGP of 17.1. This programme was the first choice for 70 applicants, resulting in a demand-to-supply ratio of 2.33, which is more than double the national average from the previous year.
Nationwide, 54% of student applicants were placed in their first choice, whereas at Técnico, this figure was 68%. Furthermore, within the School, 95% of students who secured a spot were admitted to their third choice or higher, compared to 85% nationwide. Through CNAES, Técnico is welcoming applicants from across the country, as well as from Angola, Luxembourg, and Macau.
It is also important to note that the School filled 98% of its available places in the 1st call, admitting 1,656 applicants. The Undergraduate Programme in Aerospace Engineering ranked among the top five programmes with the highest MGP in the country once again. Although it offers one of the highest numbers of places available, this undergraduate programme boasts the highest MGP in the entire Lisbon region.
Técnico students have access to various forms of financial aid
Each year, Técnico awards scholarships to more than a hundred students totaling approximately 250,000 euros, thanks to the support from more than two dozen patrons. The awarding of these scholarships, coordinated by Técnico’s Academic Development Unit, takes into account the students’ academic potential and socioeconomic circumstances; they may take the form of monetary awards, educational support, or housing assistance.
Additionally, there are also scholarships managed by other departments and entities at Técnico, such as the Feedzai Women in Science Scholarships and the TagEnergy Women in Energy Scholarships (promoted by Técnico’s Technology Transfer Unit), as well as more than 35 Merit Awards, funded by Técnico’s partner companies, totaling over 75,000 euros annually.
The Universidade de Lisboa also offers the Alumni Solidarity Scholarships, open to undergraduate students at its faculties, including Técnico.
Applications for any of these scholarships must be submitted only after the enrollment process is complete and within the specific deadlines outlined in the regulations for each scholarship.
Recursos+ Programme
In addition to these support measures, the Recursos+ Programme deserves special mention. Through this programme, students who have enrolled in the first year of the Undergraduate Programme in Mining and Energy Resources Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, have their full annual tuition covered by companies in the mineral and energy resources sectors under the Recursos+ programme.
For the third consecutive year, this initiative strengthens the link between the university and industry and seeks to attract young talent to a strategic educational programme focused on the energy transition, self-sufficiency in raw materials, and sustainable development.
The Recursos+ programme also provides scholarships to 2nd and 3rd year students who achieved academic success in the previous academic year, recognising the continuity of their academic journey and their merit.
So far, companies in the mineral and energy resources sectors have invested 42,000 euros in scholarships for students in the Undergraduate Programme in Mining and Energy Resources Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, through the Recursos+ programme.
Welcome week featuring campi tours, cultural and social activities
From 1 to 4 September, 2nd cycle new students at Técnico can look forward to activities to help them adjust to their new school. The Welcome Week for the 2026–2027 academic year will feature campi tours, cultural and social activities to help new students get to know the city of Lisbon, its culture, and their future classmates, as well as welcome sessions for family members and guardians.
