Professor José Teixeira de Sousa elevated to IEEE senior member

The distinction recognises the significant contributions of the Técnico professor to the profession.

José Teixeira de Sousa, professor at IST Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) and researcher at INESC-ID, was recently elevated Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology, comprising more than 400 thousand professionals, in nearly 150 countries.

According to the Técnico professor “being elevated to IEEE senior member means recognition for my career, which has more than 30 years dedicated to Electrical and Computer Engineering”. “During this long period of time, I have done quite a few things. Still, I would like to highlight my early contributions to Integrated Circuit Yield Theory and my work on reconfigurable hardware, which resulted in 4 international patents and 3 startup companies”, stresses professor José Teixeira de Sousa. “I am thankful to many people, but especially to João Paulo Teixeira, who introduced me to Electronics, to Thomas Williams (IBM) and Vishwani Agrawal (Bell Labs) for our joint work on Defect Level Modelling, to Miron Abramovici (Bell Labs) for being my scientific mentor and dear friend, and finally to my co-worker Horácio Neto (INESC-ID) who is a Chess and Life Grandmaster”, he adds.

Candidates to IEEE Senior Members shall have been in professional practice for at least ten years and have at least 5 years of significant technical or professional performance.

Professor José Teixeira de Sousa received his PhD degree from Imperial College London. He worked at Bell Labs, in Murray Hill, New Jersey (1998/1999) and, in 1999, he returned to Técnico where he has been teaching ever since.

Professor José Teixeira de Sousa is member of the High Performance Computing Architectures and Systems (HPCAS) group at INESC-ID. His research interests focus on: digital circuit design, hardware / software architecture, management of technical teams, semiconductor intellectual property (marketing and sales).
