Shanghai Ranking: ULisboa continues to lead in Europe in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, with Técnico as the sole contributor

At a national level, ULisboa also leads in the fields of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.

The Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) has once again secured leading positions in the latest edition of the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). ULisboa is ranked 1st in Europe and 7th worldwide in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. At a national level, ULisboa has further strengthened its position in Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering, the latter ranking 3rd in Europe and 31st worldwide. The University’s results in these fields are largely due to Técnico as the sole contributor.
Additionally, ULisboa leads nationally in Computer Science & Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, with significant contributions from Técnico.

ULisboa is the only national institution ranked in Automation & Control and Water Resources, where Técnico also excels, as well as in Political Science, Statistics, Medical Technology, and Water Resources. Overall, across all engineering disciplines, 24 subjects were assessed, and ULisboa was ranked in 13 subfields. In total, the University leads in 23 areas nationally and appears in 35 of the 57 areas evaluated by the ranking, which encompasses Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Engineering.

This year’s edition of GRAS analyses the scientific output of institutions between 2021 and 2025. This is a bibliometric ranking, with bibliometric data collected from Web of Science (WOS) and Incites.

GRAS is based on nine objective indicators grouped into five categories:

  • World-Class Faculty – considers the awards and outstanding performance by both teaching staff and researchers;
  • World-Class Research Output – assesses the number of publications in leading journals and international academic awards;
  • High-Quality Research – takes into account the volume of publications in first-quartile scientific journals (top 25%);
  • Research Impact – measured by normalised citation impact;
  • International Collaboration – highlights the volume of scientific publications that involve international partnerships.

Técnico’s contribution to the results achieved by ULisboa has also been highlighted in previous editions of the ranking, notably in 2024 and 2025.
