On 28 April, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and the Portuguese Mathematical Society (SPM) signed a memorandum of understanding at Oeiras Campus, establishing a new phase of collaboration between the two institutions, with an impact on the areas of education, research, and scientific outreach.
“This agreement will allow the Portuguese Mathematical Society to establish its headquarters here and to jointly organise activities that will help enliven the campus and offer extracurricular activities to share our message with the community”, said Adelino Galvão, a professor at Técnico and member of the Oeiras Campus Management Committee. Additionally, the professor highlighted the partnership’s potential to expand initiatives to municipalities such as Oeiras, Sintra, or Cascais.
The memorandum provides, among other points, for the provision of campus space for the SPM’s facilities, the joint development of scientific and educational activities, and collaboration on initiatives connecting with society. It also includes regular events at the Oeiras Campus, including national meetings, summer schools, and initiatives aimed at different audiences, ranging from secondary school students to the general public.
For Eugénio Rocha, president of the SPM, this agreement represents more than just a logistical solution. “It can, in fact, open doors to coexistence and mutual benefit between the two entities, which could have long-term significance for society itself”, he stated. Recalling the Society’s history, he highlighted the importance of its mission today: “Mathematics is relevant in countless fields, which underscores the importance of this scientific discipline”.
He also emphasised the importance of creating gathering and sharing spaces. “We need students to discover their vocations and we encourage professionals to come and engage in dialogue. This space ultimately becomes a unique opportunity for collaboration”, he added.
Joana Mendonça, Vice President of Técnico for the Oeiras Campus, highlighted the symbolism of the moment and how the partnership aligns with the School’s strategic vision. “This agreement is yet another way for us to connect with society”, she stated.
The memorandum has an initial term of five years, renewable, and provides for the creation of a joint committee to monitor and develop the joint initiatives.
