Campus and Community

Técnico has expanded its number of patron-funded scholarships with the addition of the Norvia Group

The first recipient of the “Norvia Group” Scholarship Programme is an Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate student.

Técnico’s most recent scholarship award ceremony – The “Norvia Group” Scholarship Programme – took place on 16 March, in the Civil Engineering Museum, at Alameda campus of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. Leonel de Sousa Ribeiro, a third-year student of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was the first scholarship recipient.

“It’s good to know that there are companies like Norvia that support students”, said the student. He took the opportunity to talk about the voluntary work he will be undertaking as part of the scholarship, which is a mandatory component of the programme, and he expressed his hope “to help the community grow”.

The Vice-President of Técnico for Academic Affairs, Francisco Melo, thanked the new patron “for recognising the work developed at Técnico and its most valuable asset: its students”.

The ceremony was attended by the Norvia Group representatives Tomás Espírito Santo and João Pedro Espírito Santo, also Técnico alumni, who expressed their “pride in being associated with an institution like Técnico”. They wished the student “every success in his personal and professional life and a bright future”, noting that “his success signifies the success of this initiative”.

Also present at the event was the coordinator of the Undergraduate programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Paulo Correia, who appealed to Leonel de Sousa Ribeiro’s generosity so that he might later “give back” this scholarship by becoming a patron himself. He took the opportunity to invite the Norvia Group representatives to present the Integrative Projects (PIC) for Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The “Norvia Group” Scholarship Programme is now part of over 20 patron-funded scholarships to support undergraduate and master’s students at Técnico.
