On 15 January 2026, former students of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, gathered in Toronto, Canada, for the launch of the city’s Técnico Alumni Chapter.  The initiative marks its integration into the international network of Técnico Alumni Chapters, strengthening the connection between the School and its alumni abroad. Toronto thus joins other cities that host local chapters of the Técnico Alumni community, with the aim of consolidating contacts, promoting joint initiatives and maintaining the connection to Técnico and Portugal.

According to Rogério Colaço, president of Técnico, “this launch consolidates the School’s commitment to bringing together its global community, promoting the spirit of sharing, collaboration and belonging that defines Técnico, while paving the way for future collaborative initiatives between the community and Portuguese entities around the world”.

The meeting, held in the context of a severe snowstorm in the region, was marked by the alumni sharing memories of professors, academic experiences, and life on campus, reflecting diverse professional paths. There was also time to exchange views on current national issues.

The relevance and potential of the initiative were also highlighted by Luís Sequeira, director of the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) in Canada, who attended the event. The alumnus highlighted that “more than 50 Técnico alumni were identified in the Greater Toronto Area” and expressed AICEP Canada’s full availability to support the Chapter’s activities, in coordination with the Embassy of Portugal in Ottawa, the Consulates General of Portugal in Canada and other institutional and business partners.

The creation of the Chapter is the result of a process of mobilising former students in the region, in collaboration with the Career Development and Alumni Office at Técnico, reinforcing the network’s international presence.
