TUIST serenades warm the hearts of Areeiro seniors

More than 30 people, aged over 65 years, had the opportunity to watch TUIST serenades in a single day.

The Areeiro Parish Council and TUIST decided to organise an initiative to reduce loneliness and social isolation among residents. “Both parties were immediately interested and the idea developed naturally”, recalls Miguel Mendes, TUIST member. On June 29, TUIST performed several serenades in Areeiro Parish.

TUIST enchanted those in the window or passing by, with one of the most emblematic Portuguese academic traditions. The initiative also marked the European Music Day, celebrated on June 21.

More than 30 people, aged over 65 years, had the opportunity to watch TUIST serenades in a single day. “The serenades were very well welcomed, especially by the elderly people”, says Miguel Mendes.

The TUIST members were not dissuaded by their high workload, on the contrary, they felt encouraged to cheer up those who don’t leave home for more than a year and often feel sad and alone. “Thanks to the dedication of our members, it was possible to combine studies with rehearsals and performance”, highlights the TUIST member.

“This initiative was very rewarding and we will not forget people’s reactions: crying, laughter. People who said ‘I wish I were 28 again’”, says the TUIST member. “We are considering the possibility of repeating this initiative, if the evolution of the pandemic allows it”, says Miguel Mendes.
