The performance of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, is once again reflected in Universidade de Lisboa’s (ULisboa) standing in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, reinforcing the institution’s presence in the fields of ‘Engineering’ and ‘Technology’.
In the ‘Engineering & Technology’ category, where Técnico focuses a significant portion of its teaching and research activities, ULisboa remains the national leader, rising to 50th place in Europe and 166th worldwide, showing a positive trajectory in terms of international recognition.
Among the specific fields, “Civil & Structural Engineering” stands out—with Técnico being the sole representative—ranking the Portuguese institution among the top 150 in the world out of 277 institutions evaluated.
Of the 12 subjects considered in the ranking, ULisboa ranks first nationally in eight, many of which align with Técnico’s academic and scientific offer. These include “Chemical Engineering,” “Electrical and Computer Engineering,” “Mechanical Engineering,” “Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering,” and “Mathematics,” all of which are ranked among the top 200 universities worldwide.
The ranking, produced by Quacquarelli Symonds, is based on indicators such as ‘academic reputation’, ‘employer reputation’, ‘research citations per paper, and ‘international research network’.
