Eighteen professors and researchers from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, were honoured at the 2026 edition of the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa)/ Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards. The Técnico scientific community earned nine scientific awards and nine honourable mentions, showcasing the importance of the research conducted within the School across ten different fields of knowledge.
The awards ceremony took place on 16 June, in Pavilhão de Portugal’s Congress Center, bringing ULisboa’s Scientific Meeting to a close. Held under the theme “Scientific Cooperation in a Changing World,” the event highlighted the importance of collaboration in generating knowledge and addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges.
Of the 22 scientific awards presented this year by Universidade de Lisboa, nine went to Técnico professors and researchers. Each award is worth 6,500 euros and recognises achievements in the following areas:
- Computer Science, Computer Engineering: André Filipe Torres Martins, Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT);
- Earth Science and Geophysics: Leonardo Azevedo, Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente (CERENA);
- Economics and Management: Ana Isabel Cerqueira de Sousa Gouveia Carvalho, Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEGIST);
- Civil Engineering: Maria Cristina Silva, Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS);
- Environmental Engineering and Energy: Maria da Glória de Almeida Gomes, Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS);
- Electrical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Avionics): Hugo Gabriel Valente Morais, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID);
- Mechanical engineering, Ocean Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Aeronaves): Shan Wang, Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC);
- Physics and Materials: Marco Piccardo, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Microsistemas e Nanotecnologias (INESC-MN);
- Pure and Applied Mathematics: Filipe Mena, Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD).
Of the 35 honourable mentions awarded, nine were given to members of the Técnico academic community:

- Mechanical engineering, Ocean Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Aircraft): Baiqiao Chen, Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC);
- Pure and Applied Mathematics: Patrícia Gonçalves, Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD);
- Pure and Applied Mathematics: Simão Fernandes Correia, Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD);
- Chemistry and Chemical Engineering: Diogo Santos, Center of Physics and Engineering of Advanced Materials (CeFEMA).
Created to “recognise scientific research and encourage high-quality, high-impact international publications”, the Universidade de Lisboa / Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards cover 26 scientific fields. Through the evaluation of books, book chapters, original articles, and review articles, the initiative annually recognises the relevance and impact of scientific work produced at Universidade de Lisboa.
