The 2025 edition of the ‘THE by subject rankings’, an initiative of Times Higher Education (THE) that annually ranks the world’s best higher education institutions, was published on 22 January. Técnico’s expertise in several fields once again contributed to the excellent performance of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa).
In this ranking, institutions are judged in different categories covering scientific areas according to their performance in teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
In the ‘Engineering’ category, a core area taught at Técnico, which encompasses areas such as ‘General Engineering’, ‘Chemical Engineering’, ‘Civil Engineering’, ‘Electrical and Electronic Engineering’ and ‘Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’, a total of 1488 institutions were ranked worldwide. In this category, ULisboa is the best placed institution at national level – ex aequo, with the University of Porto – and is ranked in the 301-400 range, refelecting the same performance as the previous edition.
The same trend was registered in ‘Physical Sciences’, which includes ‘Chemistry’, ‘Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences’, ‘Mathematics and Statistics’ and ‘Physics and Astronomy’. Of the 1477 institutions assessed in this category, ULisboa ranks in the 401-500 range of the best universities worldwide. In ‘Computer Science’, of the 1122 institutions, ULisboa ranks in the 401-500 range of the best universities worldwide, as it was in 2024.
