O seminário é organizado pelo Centro de Ciência e Tecnologia do Ambiente e do Mar do Instituto Superior Técnico (MARETEC), e faz parte das MARETEC Talks, que ocorrem todas as terceiras quartas-feiras de cada mês.»

Resumo:

The evolution of inequality and economic growth are among the central concerns of Economic History. However, the use of contemporary measures of well-being, such as GDP per capita or the Human Development Index (HDI), poses methodological challenges and is constrained by the scarcity of historical sources. In this context, since the late 1980s, Economic History has also drawn on the concept of the biological standard of living – the relationship between human physical development and economic, social, and environmental conditions – to measure inequality and economic development.

This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on the Portuguese case, while also highlighting recent findings and ongoing research projects in this field.
