Abstract

The plasma membrane of the cell, composed of lipid and protein molecules, constitutes a physical, chemical, and electrical barrier between the outside world and the inside of the cell. Similarly, within the cell, membrane-bounded organelles compartmentalize the biochemical reactions that fuel life. Accordingly, each organelle membrane has a characteristic lipid and protein composition that endows it with its characteristic, unique functions. Our laboratory investigates how the organelle membrane code is established. This seminar will focus on the Golgi apparatus, which constitutes the central distribution center, analogous to a post office, of the cell by directing the trafficking of lipids and proteins to their resident organelle or to the cell surface. Novel approaches have been developed to visualize protein and lipid trafficking in live cells and these have been harnessed to elucidate the mechanisms that couple protein and lipid sorting in the Golgi apparatus.
