CMU Portugal opens call to award up to 10 PhD scholarships in ICT between the United States and Portugal

The CMU Portugal Program has an Open Call for up to 10 Dual Degree Ph.D. scholarships for students who wish to get two diplomas, one by Carnegie Mellon University and other by a Portuguese university. Instituto Superior Técnico is one of CMU Portugal’s affiliated institutions.

The ten scholarships focus on cutting-edge areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and are funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

The application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic year will depend on the program:

  • December 11th, 2024 for Computer Science (CS), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Language Technologies (LTI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, Societal Computing (SC) and Software Engineering (SE);
  • December 15th, 2024 for Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Engineering and Public Policy (EPP).

The scholarships will fully support the tuition fees and provide a monthly stipend while at CMU and Portuguese host University. The duration is 5 years (being renewed annually), of which 3 years will be spent in Portugal and 2 years will be spent at CMU. The courses are entirely taught in English, both in the United States and in Portugal.

The CMU Portugal program already has 18 years of experience in granting dual degree Ph.D. scholarships and since its creation 93 students have already obtained a dual degree. Among the alumni are countless success stories in leadership positions in national companies such as Feedzai, Unbabel or Cloudflare. In the United States, the program has students at IBM, Apple, Meta or Amazon but also at Universities such as Carnegie Mellon, University of California, Berkeley or John Hopkins University. In Europe there are students in positions at the University of Utrecht, Eindhoven and Amsterdam but also in leading institutions such as Huawei, Amazon or the European Commission.
