About Loures Campus

The Loures Campus (Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear) is one of the country’s leading technological and educational centres, namely in nuclear science and technology, ionising radiation, and radiological protection and safety.

By providing unique infrastructure at the national level, the campus fosters scientific and technological research focused on addressing societal challenges. These priorities include climate change, environmental sustainability, energy production, cultural heritage protection, and health promotion.

At the Loures Campus, students benefit from innovative and hands-on teaching methods. They actively engage in research projects and collaborate with companies, industries, and authorities, which helps them enhance both their technical knowledge and cross-cutting skills.

The Campus also offers specialised services and is recognised both nationally and internationally in areas such as radiological protection and safety, metrology, radioactive waste management, and radio-sterilisation.

Infrastructures and Services

Research and Innovation

Loures Campus serves as a collaborative hub, uniting researchers from diverse research units such as the Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology (C2TN), the Institute for Plasma and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN) and the Centre for Structural Chemistry (CQE). Together, these researchers address society’s most pressing challenges, with a primary focus on leveraging nuclear techniques and ionizing radiation to tackle priority areas.

Education

Located at the Loures Campus, the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences offers the Doctoral Programme in Nuclear Engineering and Sciences and Master’s Degrees in Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage, Medical Physics and Radiological Protection and Safety.

Teaching and Research Laboratories

Loures Campus has a number of teaching and research laboratories and provides society with four Technological Development Laboratories.

Radiological Protection and Safety Laboratory

LPSR provides services in the areas of ionising radiation metrology, individual, environmental and biological dosimetry, environmental radioactivity, monitoring of installations and equipment, transport of radioactive material and radioactive waste management.

Radiation Technologies Laboratory

LR includes the Radiosterilisation Technological Unit, a semi-industrial infrastructure that uses γ radiation to sterilise and decontaminate materials.

Accelerator Laboratory

The LA provides advanced services using particle accelerators. It has unique equipment in the country, including the Van de Graaff Accelerator, the Tandem Accelerator, the Nuclear Microprobe and the Ion Implanter.

Nuclear Engineering Laboratory

LEN is responsible for the management and maintenance of the Portuguese Research Reactor.

Food Services

The campus offers a wide variety of food service areas: a bar, a canteen (lunch service only), a VIP dining hall and a space available exclusively to catering services (events/exhibitions). Vending machines are also available on campus.

Auditorium

The auditorium on campus is a multipurpose space that enables the holding of conferences, seminars and musical performances. It has a seating capacity of 160 people (standing capacity is 40 people).

Library

The library on campus provides important and diversified information to the academic community: books (monographs) and audiovisual documents, including Master’s dissertations and PhD theses.

Exhibition Space

The exhibition space is located next to the auditorium, hosting a wide range of events, such as photo exhibitions and/or academic works. This space is also used as a support for the events held in the auditorium.

ATM

There is one ATM on campus, located in the lobby of the Administrative Services building.

Meeting Room

The meeting room has a maximum capacity of 18 people and is ideal for scientific and working group meetings. It’s equipped with a wide range of multimedia equipment (sound and recording, video and projection).

Técnico Science Garden

The Science and Technology Park – Técnico Science Garden, which is part of CTN, aims to offer companies a privileged environment and a singular location for their business. This space will contribute to the promotion of scientific dissemination, as well as sporting and cultural activities.
