Pedro Amaral

(born May 30, 1973, Sao Tome and Principe)

Pedro Amaral began his professional career in 1991 at Instituto Superior Técnico, where he studied Materials Engineering. In 1996, he finished his degree and began his research career, completing his PhD at Técnico in 2004. He began his teaching career in 2011 and was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2020.

He is an integrated member of IDMEC, where he carries out research on new sustainable materials, composites and digital manufacturing technologies for the design industry, and engineering products from mineral resources and natural materials. In 2019, he founded StoneCITI – Centre for Intelligence, Technology and Innovation in Natural Stone, where he is also a Board Member. This initiative led by Técnico was developed using a collaborative methodology between companies and research centres, and was officially recognised in 2022 as a European Digital Innovation Hub. He has led multiple research and development projects with national and international industry in his field of study, and he has contributed to the promotion of Técnico spin-offs, based on the interdisciplinary collaboration and technology transfer generated at Técnico.

He was Vice-President of Técnico for Operations and Corporate Partnerships from 2020 to 2023, and also President of the Executive Committee of Técnico+, Técnico’s post-graduate school.
