The book launch session of “Introdução à Geometria” by Leonor Godinho and Margarida Mendes Lopes, published by IST Press, will take place on 18 June, at 5.30 p.m., in the Civil Engineering Museum.

The book will be presented by Miguel Abreu, Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico.

This book is intended for an introductory geometry course in the first or second year of a university maths course and is based on the authors’ lecture notes. It is not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to familiarise the reader with the basic concepts of various geometries: affine, projective, elliptic and hyperbolic, preparing students for further study and research in geometry and topology.

There are many possible ways of approaching a first geometry course. Here, an analytical approach was chosen, using coordinates and basic linear algebra techniques. The authors followed the point of view proposed by Felix Klein in the 19th century, emphasising the study of isometries in various contexts. The necessary requirements, in addition to the basic concepts of Linear Algebra, are reviewed in various appendices.

Examples are included in each chapter and detailed solutions (solved exercises) are provided. There are also around 257 different exercises that allow to test the content of the book.
