«How do you build a scientific career that starts in Chemistry and reaches the frozen extremes of the planet?
Professor João Canário will be the guest speaker at the first session of the “Conference Cycle on Ethics, Management and Innovation in Research”. João Canário is an Associate Professor with Aggregation in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. He holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences (Environmental Chemistry) from NOVA University Lisbon, and also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Université Laval and Trent University. He is also an invited researcher at the Center for Northern Studies and Vice-President of the International Arctic Science Committee.
A specialist in Environmental Chemistry, he focuses on biogeochemical cycles, particularly mercury, and has participated in campaigns in the Arctic and Antarctic since 2008. His research examines the impact of climate change on permafrost degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, and contaminant mobilisation, as well as mercury dynamics and the effects of human activity on southern ecosystems. As part of the ´PROPOLAR` projects, funded by FCT and European programmes, he contributes to understanding the role of polar regions as sensitive indicators of global environmental change.
In this session, Professor João Canário will share his scientific journey, from his training in Technological Chemistry to international recognition in the research of permanently frozen soil, highlighting the importance of studies in polar regions for assessing the “health” of the planet.
The session inaugurates the “Conference Series on Ethics, Management and Innovation in Scientific Research” promoted by PhD students from Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares (C²TN) at Técnico, through the PhD Comunica group, aiming to foster good practices, stimulate dialogue, and promote critical reflection in the scientific community.»
