C2TN Academy Seminar – The role of Sulfidogenic Bacteria

Auditorium of Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear

22 April, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Auditorium of Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear

Date: 22 April
Hour: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Venue: Auditorium of Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear

«A new seminar promoted by the C2TN Academy – C2TN – Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares – will be held in the Auditorium of the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear of Instituto Superior Técnico, with the participation of Andreia Pimenta, Junior Researcher at the Bacterial Energy Metabolism Group of the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Under the theme ‘Sulfidogenic Bacteria and the Host: From Symbiosis to Pathogenesis’, Andreia Pimenta will explore the link between sulfidogenic bacteria, gut inflammation and associated diseases, by studying the molecular mechanisms that regulate the interaction between the bacterium Bilophila wadsworthia and host cells.

This seminar will address the human gut as a dynamic ecosystem and the impact of Western diets on the gut microbiota. It will highlight the increase in sulphidogenic bacteria, such as Bilophila wadsworthia, linked to inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer, exploring the toxic effects of sulphide, its pathogenic potential and the virulence mechanisms currently being studied.

An essential talk for anyone who wants to better understand the complex relationship between diet, gut microbiota and health.»
