Date: 17 July
Hour: 11 a.m.
Venue: Auditorium of Tecnológico e Nuclear Campus
«As part of the Thematic Line “Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Health Physics”, the C²TN Academy – Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares – will be promoting the seminar “What if Wastewater Were the New Sentinels of Public Health?”, which will take place on 17 July (Thursday), at 11 a.m., in the Auditorium of the Tecnológico e Nuclear Campus, in Loures.
The event will be attended by Sílvia Monteiro, a specialist in microbiology and water reuse, and Ricardo Santos, a specialist in bacterial resistance mechanisms and emerging pathogens, both researchers at the Técnico’s Analysis Laboratory.
During the seminar, the increasingly relevant role of wastewater analysis as an essential epidemiological surveillance tool will be explored. This approach makes it possible to detect early outbreaks of diseases such as COVID-19, Dengue or H1N1 flu, monitor resistance to antimicrobials, track radioisotopes used in cancer treatments, as well as evaluate sustainable solutions for the safe reuse of water.
In the spotlight:
- SARS-CoV-2 and variants;
- H1N1 flu;
- Multidrug-resistant bacteria;
- Dengue and Chikungunya in Portugal;
- Radioisotopes in oncological treatments.
This seminar promises to exemplify how Portuguese science is transforming challenges into sustainable solutions.
