How did this academic tradition, which today symbolises the highest level of knowledge and research, come about? The title of doctor is recognised as the highest academic degree, symbolising excellence and specialisation. But what is the origin of this tradition? How has the concept of a doctorate evolved throughout history?

The Rádio Observador radio programme and podcast “E o Resto é História” (“The Rest is History”) will explore these questions, delving into the history of higher education and scientific research, with João Miguel Tavares and Rui Ramos.

The upcoming episode, “Quando é que começámos a ser doutores?” (“When did we start becoming doctors?”), will be broadcast as a special edition on the 11th edition of PhD Open Days. The conversation will trace the evolution of the title ‘doctor’ to the present day, where doctorates represent academic excellence and have a significant impact on science and society.

The broadcast will be aired on November 4 at 7 p.m. on Rádio Observador and on the website.
