Artificial Intelligence integrated into systems that interact with the physical world raises ethical and social responsibility issues that are unique and different from those discussed in the digital realm. This forum will address some of the ethical, social, and legal implications arising from the presence of AI in environments where humans live, work, and socialize.
The following topics will be explored:
- Legal liability in the event of accidents involving autonomous systems;
- Privacy concerns related to data collection by sensors in public and private spaces;
- Socioeconomic impacts of automation across different sectors;
- Ensuring equitable access to and benefits from physical AI technologies;
- Transparency and explainability in decision-making systems that influence the physical world;
- Establishing ethical standards for the development of autonomous systems, along with the need for appropriate national and international regulatory frameworks.
We will also address topics such as: how can we ensure that AI in industry and services contributes to safer and more dignified working conditions? Is it possible for smart territories and residences to promote inclusion rather than exacerbate inequality? How can we guide environmental AI towards sustainability and not just efficiency? What ethical limits should be established for AI applications in healthcare to protect patient autonomy and the doctor-patient relationship?
The forum will culminate in a reflection on the new management and governance models needed to ensure that the development of AI in interaction with the physical world is oriented towards the common good, promoting fundamental human values.
The session will bring together Teresa Almeida (Instituto Superior Técnico and ITI/LARSyS), Luis Barreto Xavier (Abreu Advogados), Paulo Mota Pinto (Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra) and other speakers to be confirmed, and will be moderated by Nuno Jardim Nunes (Instituto Superior Técnico and ITI/LARSyS).
The series of talks titled “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”, a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico and the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa), will highlight successful partnerships between the scientific community and the business sector that address practical challenges or inspire innovative solutions emerging from Portugal. Drawing on concrete examples from Portugal, researchers at Instituto Superior Técnico and its research units will present and discuss aspects of AI that are not widely recognised yet significantly impact our daily lives.
The talks will take place in Leonel Moura’s ‘Art with Science’ exhibition space, where artistic works created using robots and AI are currently on show.
