II Innovation Lab Talk – The Megacities Logistics Challenge

Rossio Railway Station - Lisbon

The “II Innovation Lab Talk – The Megacities Logistics Challenge” is a discussion session exploration on the Future of Logistics which will be held on December 5th, 2019, at the King’s Room, at Rossio Railway Station between 9:30 am and 1 pm.

According to the United Nations, 55% of the world’s population currently lives in urban areas, a percentage which is expected to increase up to 68% by 2050 (UN data, 2018). It is estimated that in 2030 there will be about 43 Megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants.

Although it is not expected that any city in Portugal will get close to 10 million inhabitants, many of the main Portuguese cities face similar logistical challenges. Moving thousands of people and goods effectively daily, from point A to point B, is a complex financial management and sustainability exercise.

Because people living in cities dwell in innovation and technology centers, there is an increase in consumer expectations and the demand for logistics services is high and. Moreover, studies predict that between 2010 and 2050 this demand will multiply by 3.

The Future of Logistics is to find solutions to the growing challenges that cities need to deal with, whether in the incoming goods or within their own territorial limits.
