The International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS) is celebrated on 18th April. In 2022, the day is celebrated under the theme “Heritage and Climate”.
The Educational Service of the Técnico Museums, together with the team of the “Treme-Treme” project, developed at CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, will organise an event on 18th April, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Civil Engineering building, to mark the International Day for Monuments and Sites 2022.
The activity we propose, according to this year’s theme, relates to the “Gaiola Pombalina (Pombalina Cage), an innovative method for the construction of resilient cities”, where participants will revisit the city of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, as it was planned and rebuilt to withstand the earthquakes of the future – to be resilient and avoid being destroyed once again. This innovative method included reinforced connections between walls and flooring and, most significantly, the introduction of an internal wooden structure within the walls, the Pombalina Cage, an innovative earthquake-resistant structure, made of vertical and horizontal elements, braced with diagonal elements (Saint Andrew’s crosses). The Earthquake Engineering was created in Portugal at that time.
The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) and ICOMOS Portugal promote the dissemination of this year’s theme in order to preserve all types of cultural heritage against adverse climate impacts, develop informed and effective responses to emergency situations and implement climate-resilient development, from an equity and justice point of view.
