Lecture by Volker Sick – American Corners

Técnico - Alameda campus

“Steps towards a Trillion Dollar CO2-Products Market”. - 2 p.m.

The American Corner@Técnico, in collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ), will organise the following lecture.

• 25th May 2022, 2 p.m.

• Speaker: Volker Sick (Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Mechanical Engineering; DTE Energy Professor of Advanced Energy Research; Director ‘Global CO2 Initiative’, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA).

• Title: “Steps towards a Trillion Dollar CO2-Products Market”.

Abstract:
Carbon dioxide capture and utilization is an attractive opportunity to help address climate change effects and to provide continued access to essential carbon-based products. that are currently made from petroleum. This talk will present products that can be produced from CO2 and key challenges that include technical, societal, political, and economic aspects. Some emphasis is given on the need for consistent and transparent life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment to provide guidance for decision makers and to ensure best outcomes for the environment and business. A trillion dollar market can be created for CO2-products over the next few decades and example for projected growth rates will be discussed.

Short bio:
His research focuses on accelerating deployments of CO2-utilization technologies that will innovate existing infrastructure and manufacturing processes, thereby finding sustainable decarbonization solutions to help address the climate crisis. He received his Doctorate and Habilitation in Physical Chemistry from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He joined the University of Michigan as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1997. The author of numerous publications in both peer reviewed and popular periodicals, his most recent awards and honors include the Royal Society of Chemistry Spiers Memorial Lecture Award (2021), DTE Energy Professor of Advanced Energy Research (2019), President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education (2018). He is a Fellow of SAE International (2007) and Fellow of the Combustion Institute (2018).

• Moderator: Isabel M. Marrucho (Full professor, DEQ/IST; CQE/MET).

Venue: “Complexo Interdisciplinar” building, Abreu Faro amphitheatre.
