An open conversation about the future of cities and living spaces, where Artificial Intelligence is redefining the way we live, move around and look after our territory.
This panel will explore how smart territories and connected homes are emerging. Case studies and developing technologies will be discussed, including:
- Traffic management with AI, featuring adaptive traffic lights and public transport systems that respond to real-time demand, traffic conditions, and pollution levels;
- Smart waste collection and efficient management of energy and water in public spaces, optimised in real time;
- Smart urban systems that automatically detect anomalies and encourage citizen participation in maintaining city;
- Smart buildings, equipped with AI that manages lighting, temperature, and security in homes, condominiums, and neighborhoods, enhancing comfort, sustainability, and autonomy.
The session will bring together João Paulo Costeira (Instituto Superior Técnico and ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS), Ernesto Morgado (SYSCOG), Paulo Calçada (Porto Digital), and other speakers to be confirmed, and will be moderated by Paulo Ferrão (Instituto Superior Técnico and IN+/LARSyS).
The series of talks titled “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”, a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico and the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa), will highlight successful partnerships between the scientific community and the business sector that address practical challenges or inspire innovative solutions emerging from Portugal. Drawing on concrete examples from Portugal, researchers at Instituto Superior Técnico and its research units will present and discuss aspects of AI that are not widely recognised yet significantly impact our daily lives.
The talks will take place in Leonel Moura’s ‘Art with Science’ exhibition space, where artistic works created using robots and AI are currently on show.
Upcoming talks:
- Smart Grids for a Sustainable Future: Energy, Water, Environment and Agriculture (12 December 2025)
- Artificial Intelligence in Health: Diagnosis, Treatment and Personalised Care (23 January 2026)
- Ethics and Social Responsibility of AI (13 February 2026)
