Date: 12 December
Hour: 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
Venue: Técnico Innovation Center, powered by Fidelidade (attendance is free)
This open discussion will focus on the technologies reshaping the management of essential resources, making our cities, countryside, and public spaces smarter and more sustainable. In this panel, we will explore how smart grids and artificial intelligence are integrating various energy sources, adjusting supply to match actual consumption, and promoting efficiency in public lighting and buildings.
We’ll also talk about smart water grids, which detect losses and improve water management, as well as environmental monitoring systems that track air quality, noise and carbon emissions, providing essential data to protect public health and the planet.
Precision agriculture will also be highlighted, namely the use of agricultural robotics and innovative pasture control through virtual fences, promoting more efficient and sustainable food production.
The session will bring together António Pascoal (Instituto Superior Técnico and ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS), Alexandre Bernardino (Instituto Superior Técnico and ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS) and João Coimbra (Quinta da Cholda), and other speakers to be confirmed, and will be moderated by Tiago Domingos (Instituto Superior Técnico and MARETEC).
The series of talks titled “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”, a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico and the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa), will highlight successful partnerships between the scientific community and the business sector that address practical challenges or inspire innovative solutions emerging from Portugal. Drawing on concrete examples from Portugal, researchers at Instituto Superior Técnico and its research units will present and discuss aspects of AI that are not widely recognised yet significantly impact our daily lives.
The talks will take place in Leonel Moura’s ‘Art with Science’ exhibition space, where artistic works created using robots and AI are currently on show.
Upcoming talks:
- Artificial Intelligence in Health: Diagnosis, Treatment and Personalised Care (23 January 2026)
- Ethics and Social Responsibility of AI (13 February 2026)
