Tribute to professor Gaspar Barreira

The Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) will organise a tribute session titled “Particle physics: from fundamental science to society”, to honour professor Gaspar Pereira de Morais Barreira. The session will take place on 11th September, at 9.20 a.m.

The Portuguese physicist Gaspar Barreira died on 1st June 2019. Gaspar Barreira, Mariano Gago and Armando Policarpo were the founders of LIP; He was the Portuguese Delegate to the CERN council and SESAME council. He was member of CERN General Council. In 2006, he received the honorific decoration of the Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the President of the Portuguese Republic for his contributions to the internationalization of Portuguese scientific research. In 2017, he was awarded the Scientific Merit Medal (created by the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education – MCTES) for his contribution to the development of science in Portugal.
