Civil Engineering seminar series: building bridges towards future careers

The 8th edition provided participants with the opportunity to take advantage of different experiences and knowledge, and also to make contact with civil engineering companies

The Civil Engineering seminar series (JEC) have moved online this year. The zoom platform brought together professors, students and companies. Throughout the week, Civil Engineering students and beyond can explore relevant topics and projects, and make contact with different companies.

Manuel Filipe, president of Fórum Civil, shared “the positive impact of the event, which exceeded 300 participants in all activities during the first day”.

Engineers from JETSJ, Engexpor and Mota- Engil, participated in the afternoon conference held this Monday, March 15 and shared the solutions developed for the construction of 6 buried floors at Hotel Meliá Lisboa. The lecture was divided into three parts: conception and design, inspection, and construction.

Engineer Neuza Carvalho (JETSJ) highlighted the adopted constructive solutions, the methods of dimensioning and calculation, and presented the instrumentation planning and observation. “The excavation site is located in a heavily urbanized area of Lisbon city and flanked by various infrastructures imposing constraints on the solutions, since it is necessary to maintain the integrity of these infrastructures during the execution of the work”, she says.

In addition to lectures and conferences, JEC also includes the Online Business Fair where participants will have the oportunity to contact directly with company representatives, deliver their resumes and clarify their doubts. Companies attending the fair: Quadrante, Casais Group, Deloitte and Rockbuilding, among many others.

“This year’s edition will also include workshops and virtual visits”, highlights Manuel Filipe. “We tried to be as multidisciplinary as possible in order to reach as many civil engineering students as possible, namely MSc students”.

This year, JEC will live stream the conferences on YouTube, which will allow students who may miss the live stream to watch the conferences later.

According to the president of Fórum Civil “the multidisciplinary approach and the dimension of Fórum Civil” is what makes JEC21 different from previous years. The Técnico student highlights “attending JEC has only positive effects, it provides very enriching experiences that, in one way or another, benefit and complement the students’ academic path”.
