This summer, the ISTSat-1, the first satellite built entirely in Portugal – at Instituto Superior Técnico – will be launched into space. But before that, a replica of this cubesat will be exhibited at Técnico Innovation Center powered by Fidelidade, located next to the Arco do Cego Garden, in Lisbon, as part of the exhibition “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories | 110 Objects”). It is one of several dozen objects that can be seen in the exhibition until the end of 2024. Prototypes of vehicles built by Técnico students, a meteorite, a volleyball champion’s cup, several generations of robots, computers and scientific apparatus are some of the objects of science, teaching, music, art and sport that show the history of the Institution, and the starting point for conversations with hundreds of people from Técnico.
These objects are now exhibited (and a book of the same name was presented on the same day), after having their story told weekly, from 23rd May 2021 to 8th September 2023, in the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”, which was part of Público’s podcasts and won the PODES 2022 award in the Science, Technology and Education category.
The ‘111th object’ was also inaugurated on May 23rd: the statue of a young owl, by the artist Bordalo II, which symbolises all the objects whose story could not be told, made from some Técnico’s recycled waste.
‘The success of this project has been enormous and the podcast has gone far beyond the boundaries of the Técnico community, helping to project Técnico’s history and culture in society,’ says Rogério Colaço, president of Instituto Superior Técnico. ‘We invite everyone to come and see this exhibition, to get to know us and see what our students and researchers do. Come in and get to know Técnico’, he adds.
