Five Técnico professors elected members of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences

The official ceremony will take place on 4 July, on the occasion of the Academy anniversary.

The Lisbon Academy of Sciences has elected five Técnico professors as corresponding members in various sections of different areas of knowledge. The diplomas will be officially awarded on 4 July, in the Great Hall of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, on the occasion of its anniversary.

The Academy has two classes – Sciences and Letters – each one divided into nine sections. Members are chosen among Portuguese citizens who have produced scientific or literary work.

The following Técnico professors will be included in the list of new corresponding members in 2024:

Class of Sciences

Teresa Peña, 2nd Section – Physics

Nuno Maulide, 3rd Section – Chemistry

Arlindo Oliveira, 8th Section – Information Sciences and Technologies

Paulo Mateus, 8th Section – Information Sciences and Technologies

Class of Letters

Ana Tostões, 9th Section – Communication and Arts

The Técnico alumna Manuela Veloso was also elected a corresponding member of the Class of Sciences, 7th Section – Engineering Sciences.

Some duties of a corresponding member are attendance at plenary sessions, participation in the works of the Academy, and promoting the activities of the sections to which they belong. The full members, on the other hand, are responsible for leading the scientific, literary and administrative activity, electing and being elected to academic positions, presenting their communications, reports, proposals and suggestions for works, among other prestigious activities.

The Lisbon Academy of Sciences aims to practice and encourage scientific research, stimulate the enrichment and study of other forms of national culture, collaborate in education and teaching activities and contribute to the appreciation and discussion of ideas through research.

In recent years, several Técnico researchers have been elected to the Academy. In 2023, the following became full members: Hélder Rodrigues, Isabel Sá Correia and Mário Figueiredo. In the same year, the Academy elected André Martins, Ana Patrícia Gonçalves, Carlos Fernandes, Isabel Ribeiro and José Borbinha as corresponding members. In the previous year, 2022, João Pedro Conde, Carlos de Sousa Oliveira, António Reis, José Fonseca de Moura and Rui Silva Martins became full members, while Miguel Tribolet de Abreu, Vitor Cardoso, Yasser Omar, Maria Fátima Guedes Silva, José Santos-Victor and Mário Silveirinha became corresponding members.
