Four Técnico professors were appointed Councillor Members of the Ordem dos Engenheiros on National Engineer’s Day, celebrated on 22 and 23 November in Porto. António Lamas, Fátima Vaz, Fernando Lau and Luís Guerreiro received the title at a celebration marking the 89th anniversary of the Ordem dos Engenheiros and honouring the vital role of engineering in the country’s development.
The event celebrated engineers who received the Silver Medal, along with those who were awarded the titles of Councillor Member or new Specialist.
The professional title of Councillor Engineer is granted to senior engineers who hold a master’s degree in a specialised engineering field from a recognised Portuguese higher education institution, or an equivalent foreign academic degree in engineering that has been officially recognised. Eligible candidates must also have a minimum of 15 years of experience in the engineering profession. Engineers who do not hold the aforementioned academic qualification may be appointed Councillor Member, provided they have 20 years of experience in the engineering profession.
The Ordem dos Engenheiros regularly recognises Técnico professors with various distinctions. In October 2024, Hugo Plácido da Silva was appointed a Councillor Member of the Ordem dos Engenheiros. In September of the same year, Emanuel Maranha das Neves, a retired professor, and Carlos Mineiro Aires, an alumnus and member of the School Council, were awarded silver and gold medals. Técnico alumni Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon and member of the School Council, and Maria da Graça Carvalho, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and Minister for Environment and Energy, were awarded by the national board of the Ordem dos Engenheiros in the Civic Intervention of the Engineer category and Gender Equality in Engineering category, respectively. The following professors stood out in specialised awards: Maria do Rosário Partidário (Environmental Engineering), Miguel Sério Lourenço (Civil Engineering), Rui Silva Martins (Electrical Engineering), António Costa e Silva (Geological and Mining Engineering), Arlindo Oliveira (Computer Science and Engineering) and João Bordado (Chemical and Biological Engineering). The Career Award went to Civil Engineering alumnus José Luís Câncio Martins.
In May 2023, the Board of Directors of Ordem dos Engenheiros honoured Técnico professor Rita Bento for her professional career and the prestige she has brought to the engineering field.
