IST Press published the book “Elasticidade: Conceitos e Aplicações” (“Elasticity: Concepts and Applications”)‚ by Paulo Ivo Teixeira, Dragos Moldovan and Manuel Barata Marques.

The theory of elasticity is a basic subject in bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in most areas of engineering, such as aerospace, environmental, biomedical, civil, physical, materials, or mechanical engineering. Its wide applicability comes from the fact that, in many practical situations, we are interested in understanding the behaviour of macroscopic portions of the matter when subjected to stress or temperature variations.

The authors not only deduce the basic equations of the linear elasticity problem, but also show how they can be solved, and what are the benefits and limitations of analytical, semi-analytical and numerical methods of resolution. This strategy leads to the Finite Element Method, of great practical utility, and rarely addressed in works of this nature published in Portuguese.

The book contains solved problems (“Examples”) to facilitate the assimilation of subjects and illustrate their applications. In addition, a set of exercises and respective solutions is proposed at the end of each chapter (in the case of more elaborate exercises, an outline of the resolution is provided at the end of the book).
