Campus and Community

Mobility Open Day: “Técnico is one of the top schools in the country in terms of mobility opportunities”

The event took place at Alameda and Oeiras campi on 25 and 26 November, respectively.

“Our goal is to make mobility opportunities accessible to the entire Técnico community”, said Luís Moreira, Coordinator of the International Affairs Unit, which is responsible for organising the event. The initiative aims to demonstrate that “mobility is available for students, technical and administrative staff, and professors, showcasing all the possibilities for international mobility beyond the typical Erasmus programme”. The fourth edition took place on 25 and 26 November, at Alameda and Oeiras campi, respectively.

The event featured Mobility Talks targeting students interested in an international academic experience, which allowed students who had previously participated in mobility programmes to share their experiences.

At Alameda campus, Sérgio Gonçalves, a Civil Engineering undergraduate student, explains that he joined the Athens programme in March 2024 and chose Trondheim (Norway) as his destination. He recalled experiencing “temperature shock” and packing a “checked bag full of thermal clothing”, but assured that it was a “very enriching experience”. As a travel enthusiast, the student admitted that this opportunity was one of his main motivations, especially since the programme offered equivalent academic credits. At the end of the mobility programme, he returned to Portugal with a diploma in Sustainability Hydropower Development and was certain that the experience was good “for networking, meeting new people and, above all, it looks good on your CV”.

Alice Mota, a Computer Science and Engineering master’s student, chose the Erasmus programme. Munich was her home for six months, from where she was able to visit other countries, such as Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. She admitted that “it’s good to get away from Técnico and gain new perspectives”, which made her “come back with new motivation”.

The event at Oeiras campus sparked curiosity among students, especially those approaching the transition to a master’s degree.

“I always wanted to go on Erasmus, but only now have I realised that it might be more suitable during a master’s degree. I also didn’t know about international summer internships. It was new to me”, shared Rodrigo Ramos, a Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate student. “These moments are important because they happen before applications and help to avoid last-minute surprises and bureaucracy”.

João Relvas, who is also studying Computer Science and Engineering, highlighted the growing interest in the mobility opportunities offered by Técnico. “I especially liked the double degree programmes. I already knew about Erasmus, but here I was able to better understand how the programmes work in practice. It is useful to have access to this information before the call for applications”.

International mobility opportunities at Técnico currently cover hundreds of partner institutions around the world, and are one of the School’s strategic areas in terms of internationalisation and student training.

The event featured stands highlighting international mobility opportunities from the International Mobility and Partnerships Office (NMPI) and included participation from the International Fundraising Office (NCFI) and the International Admissions Office (NAI).
