Gonçalo Correia, former student and currently Invited Assitant Professor at Técnico, won the 1st edition of the “Vencer o Adamastor” Award, established by INESC and the Portuguese newspaper Público.
Gonçalo Correia’s research work aims at simplifying machine learning models, and, consequently, reducing the carbon footprint of AI and improving efficiency. The work developed by the researcher has applications in automatic translation.
The “Vencer o Adamastor Award” aims to recognise young Portuguese scientists working in the areas of electrical engineering, computing and related fields. The 1st edition of the Award, worth €20 000, took place in 2022.
Gonçalo Correia concluded his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Técnico/Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) in 2022, with the thesis «Learnable Sparsity and Weak Supervision for Data-Efficient, Transparent, and Compact Neural Models», under the supervision of professor André Martins.
