Técnico hosted the first symposium under the partnership with Johns Hopkins University

The collaboration with Johns Hopkins has allowed Técnico students to attend the American university.

The HOPTEC program, a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico and Johns Hopkins University celebrated a new milestone on 18 December – the first HOPTEC symposium, dedicated to engineering applied to life sciences, took place in the Great Hall at Técnico – Alameda campus. It was a symbolic moment taking place alternately at the two institutions every year.

Inês Reis and Alfredo Inostroza, Técnico students who recently completed their master’s programmes in partnership with Johns Hopkins, served as ambassadors for the HOPTEC programme, shared the experience of carrying out their research in a collaborative environment between the two schools.

The event also included debate sessions on precision medicine and engineering applications in life sciences. Several alumni from the two institutions attended the event.

The HOPTEC program, celebrated in November 2023, includes scholarships for research funding and a calendar of seminars promoting collaboration in the bioengineering field. In 2023, HOPTEC was one of the five winners of ‘UP – Higher Education’, a competition to support the creation of partnerships between higher education institutions in Portugal and the United States, funded by the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD).
