Frederico Fiúza, researcher and professor of Plasma Physics, is the fourth Técnico professor to be elected fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). “The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognize members who may have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology”. The Técnico professor has been elected “for leadership and fundamental contributions to the plasma physics of energetic particle generation from collisionless shocks, magnetic reconnection, and MHD instabilities”.
Each year, no more than 0,5% of the Society’s membership (excluding student members) is recognised by their peers for election to the status of Fellow of the American Physical Society. Frederico Fiúza says “I am honoured to be elected as a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), particularly because the nomination is made by my peers from the Division of Plasma Physics”. According to Frederico Fiúza, this shows that the impact of his research is recognised and valued at an international level, which reinforces his conviction that “the work with students and collaborators is [evolving] in the right direction”.
