Técnico returns to basic schools with more than 40 science and engineering outreach activities

“Engenharia e ciência vão à escola” showcases scientific activities to more than 1,000 students during Science and Technology Week.

From 24 to 28 November, Instituto Superior Técnico will once again bring researchers, engineers, and students to schools in Lisbon, Loures, and Oeiras municipalities for the second edition of “Engenharia e Ciência vão à escola” initiative, included in Science and Technology Week. Throughout the week, around a thousand students from 1st to 9th grade will participate in talks and demonstrations that bring everyday research closer to the school environment.

The 2025 edition resumes its goal of promoting scientific literacy and showcasing the diversity of research areas at Técnico. The programme includes more than 40 activities, organised by 14 research units, 5 student projects and students’ organisations, covering topics such as energy, the environment, plasma physics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, bioengineering, management, and information technologies.

The following research units will participate in the initiative:

  • Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD)
  • Marine, Environment and Technology Center (MARETEC)
  • Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares (C2TN)
  • Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEGIST)
  • Center of Physics and Engineering of Advanced Materials (CeFEMA)
  • Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE)
  • Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente (CERENA)
  • Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB)
  • Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CEris)
  • Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN)
  • Mechanical Engineering Institute (idMEC)
  • Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID)
  • Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Microsistemas e Nanotecnologias (INESC-MN)

Projects and students’ organisations involved in the initiative:

  • FST Lisboa – Formula Student
  • IEEE-IST – Student Branch
  • NFIST – Physics Group
  • Projeto de Sustentabilidade Energética Móvel (PSEM)
  • Técnico Fuel Cell

Science and Technology Week takes place every year on 24 November to celebrate the National Day of Scientific Culture in honour of Rómulo de Carvalho. It brings together initiatives across the country that reinforce the importance of scientific knowledge among new generations. Técnico participates through this initiative, which opens doors to dialogue between those who conduct research and those who are just beginning to discover science.
