Professors and researchers of Engineering Physics, as well as from other areas of expertise, visited the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear (CTN) and spent a day full of activities related to Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Science. According to professor Manuel Almeida, president of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Science (DECN), “CTN has many multi-purpose spaces and we want students to know that”. “This initiative will certainly be improved and updated in the future”, he added.
According to professor Luís Lemos Alves, president of the Department of Physics Engineering (DF), the event “Dia Nuclear” aims “to strengthen the link between the DF and the DECN”. The role of Técnico in this area was also highlighted: “in Portugal, when we speak of Nuclear we are speaking of Técnico”
This event also included visits to the Laboratory of Accelerators and X-Rays Diffraction, the SIMPLE-lx laboratory and the Laboratory for Radioactivity and Radiobiology Measurements.
Sónia Cabrita, a MSc Physics student, was fascinated: “I think this is a great opportunity to know more about these laboratories and how they work. I am really enjoying it here and I have learnt a lot”, she shares.
Professor Teresa Peña highlighted the importance of this day, once it is a unique opportunity “to show our students more about the laboratories, but in a different way from what they are used to”. According to the professor, this event will certainly be repeated: “We intend to create a tradition by celebrating this day and the teaching of Nuclear Physics in these facilities”.
