Técnico collects opinion pieces from the school community in the second book of the ‘Ideias’ collection

The book includes texts written by professors, researchers and students published between January 2021 and December 2024 in a special section of Jornal i.

Técnico has released the second volume of the ‘Ideias’ collection, which gathers opinion pieces from the school community. This publication marks another milestone in the collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico and Jornal i, celebrating Técnico’s 114th anniversary. Through IST Press and the newspaper, this new volume, titled “Ideias sobre Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior pela Comunidade do Instituto Superior Técnico”, is a compilation of reflections from professors, researchers, and students published between January 2021 and December 2024.

In total, 80 members of the Técnico community (professors, researchers and students) share their insights on various research areas, teaching methods, and pedagogical experiences in these opinion pieces.

The book was launched on “Dia do Técnico 2025” during the anniversary celebrations and is now available at newsagents, including the Técnico merchandise store and the IST Press website. This volume follows the first collection of chronicles published between May 2017 and December 2020 in Jornal i.

‘More than a portrait of the state of the art in terms of scientific and technological knowledge, and the major issues associated with these themes, the collaboration with Jornal i is a way of engaging the public with topics of scientific, technological, educational and higher education that concern everyone and are increasingly relevant in our lives’, said Rogério Colaço, president of Técnico.

José Cabrita Saraiva, deputy executive director of the weekly newspaper, describes the partnership in the book’s foreword as ‘an excellent example of the academic world reaching out to society – and a response to those who still believe that academics are disconnected from reality, locked inside four walls or in their ivory tower, discussing Byzantine issues’. In his opinion, these texts provide ‘a glimpse into current challenges’ and ‘unveil potential solutions that could shape our future’, offering both ‘a reflection of today’s world and insight into what lies ahead’.
