European project led by Técnico wins Regiostars 2025 Awards

AGEO was distinguished by the European Commission in the “A Green Europe” category and was the most voted project.

The AGEO – Atlantic Platform for Geological Risk Management European project, coordinated by Instituto Superior Técnico and supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area, was the big winner of the Regiostars 2025 Awards, in the “Green Europe” category. The project also won the Public Choice Award, given to the most voted project at the award ceremony held in Brussels on October 15, during the European Week of Regions and Cities.

The project, coordinated by Rui Carrilho Gomes, professor at Técnico and researcher at the Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CEris) brings together scientists, policymakers, and local communities in a mobile app that allows users to issue alerts, access information about events and educational content on geological risks in the Atlantic region, protecting European citizens from risk scenarios such as landslides, seismic activity, floods and coastal erosion.

Among the main results of the project is the development of five pilot observatories for citizens, enabling local communities to collect and share data on geological risks. These observatories function as monitoring and early warning support tools, strengthening the link between science and civil protection.

Created by the European Commission, the Regiostars Awards annually recognise the best EU-funded projects, highlighting their contribution to sustainable regional development and territorial cohesion. The consortium coordinated by Técnico brought together 13 partners from Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. It was the only European cooperation project led by a Portuguese academic institution to be shortlisted.
