Gulbenkian Merit Scholarships: Applications are open until 31 October

These scholarships are intended to support high-potential young people with limited financial means applying for their first year of higher education.

Applications for the Gulbenkian merit scholarships for students applying for their first year of higher education are open until 31 October.

The scholarship provides €2,000 per academic year and includes a one-time additional grant of €2,000 to support a period of international mobility, whether through Erasmus or another similar programme offered by the student’s institution.

Scholarships may be renewed until the completion of a Master’s degree, subject to the renewal conditions outlined in the regulations.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 170 points in their application for higher education through the general admission process, for the academic year 2025/26, in the degree programme in which they are enrolled;
  • Proof of application for the social support grant from the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES). In order to verify household income, applying for the DGES social support grant is a mandatory requirement for the Gulbenkian Merit Scholarship, regardless of the household income level;
  • Scholarships will only be awarded to candidates whose annual per capita household income does not exceed €14,000, as verified by the Social Services of their higher education institution.
