In its most recent multiannual evaluation, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) rated ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’ more than 90% of the research units affiliated with Instituto Superior Técnico. The preliminary results were published on the FCT website on 15 April and are available for public consultation.
Among the 22 research units and associate laboratories affiliated with Técnico, 20 were rated equal to or higher than ‘Very Good’, surpassing the national average of 75%. All Units affiliated with Técnico have secured over 61 million euros in funding. The Units with the highest rating of ‘Excellent’ are:
- Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT)
- Associate Laboratory of Energy, Transports and Aerospace (LAETA) [Associate Laboratory that includes the Mechanical Engineering Institute (idMEC)]
- Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS)
- Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems (LARSys) [Associate Laboratory that includes the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI), the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+) and the Marine, Environment and Technology Center (MARETEC)]
- Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC ID)
- Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP)
- Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN)
- Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD)
- Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEGIST)
- Center for Astrophysics and Gravitation (CENTRA)
- Centre for Innovation in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture (CiTUA)
According to FCT, ‘R&D Units are periodically evaluated and given a rating that determines funding for the following multi-annual period’. In this edition, the evaluation focused on the scientific and technological activities carried out by the research units between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2023 and on the objectives, strategy, activity plan and organisation for the period 2025 to 2029.
Units with an Excellent or Very Good merit rating have approved funding of 609.8 million euros for the period 2025 to 2029. Of this, 110 million euros is PRR funding, with an implementation deadline of 30 June 2026.
Técnico has produced 2,013 doctoral graduates within its research units and, by 2024, has achieved 3,349 scientific publications on the SCOPUS network, reflecting the substantial work conducted in its research units and associate laboratories.
