Financial literacy represents an advantage for any professional who wants to make better financial decisions, both on a personal and business level. The course in Finance for Engineers contributes to greater financial literacy, giving a better understanding of capital markets, and equipping the participants with the tools to invest in banking and better understand the implications of certain financing, investment and risk management decisions and financial returns.
This course is part of the Specialisation Programme in Engineering and Management as optional. It is coordinated by Professor António Quintino (IST/DEG).

Objectives:
- To assess the profitability and risk of investing in financial assets, individually considered or grouped into investment portfolios, and to evaluate different financial assets, such as bonds and shares;
- To understand the role of financial information, both in making company management decisions and in investors’ capital application decisions;
- To apply financial planning techniques to model companies’ investment and financing objectives and strategies;
- To analyze investment decisions, financing strategies, capital structure, estimate the cost of capital, dividend distribution and share buyback.
Prerequisites:
- Bachelor’s degree
We recommend that students take the Management for Engineers course first, and then Finance for Engineers.
